Holter Monitor

A Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiogram (EKG) that monitors the electrical activity of a patient as he or she goes freely about the activities of normal daily life. The most common reason a Holter monitor is used is for the diagnosis of an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia), though it may also be used to monitor existing pacemakers, diagnose a lack of oxygen-rich blood flowing to the heart (cardiac ischemia) or to measure variability in the heart rate.

To prepare:

There is no special preparation for this painless test. Wires (electrodes) from the Holter monitor are taped to thoroughly cleansed areas on the patient's skin, and you'll be sent home to partake in your normal schedule of activities, except for showering/bathing. You'll be asked to keep a diary of your activities and any symptoms you experience. The test lasts a minimum of 24 hours or as long as five days, depending on the kind of Holter monitor and your symptoms.
